The Great Room, a “Trendy Family Place” By Philip Wen, Owner and Founder “If you are looking for a trendy family-friendly place without pretension and with a strong sense of community, then this is the place for you,” wrote Tony L. of Redondo Beach about our restaurant, The Great Room, on Yelp.com. We celebrated our Grand Opening only three months ago, and it is very gratifying for the owner of a brand-new business to read the warmly positive reviews we are receiving. My wife, Soomi, and I and all of our wonderful staff work very hard to make The Great Room a fun and welcoming experience for all of our guests. As parents of two boys aged 8 and 5, we knew from the start that families would enjoy going out to a restaurant where the children will be welcomed and entertained—without the adults having to make much effort to keep their kids from getting bored or cranky. We have rooms designed for younger guests, and the still young-at-heart, and provide entertainment for patrons of all ages. As another guest posted on Yelp, “Awesome place if you're the dad that has to watch the kiddos while mom has a night out.” We host mommy groups, too! The Great Room is the fulfillment of a dream for me. Arriving in the U.S. from Taiwan at the age of 12, I grew up in Riverside, moved to West LA for 10 years, and have been living in North Redondo Beach for seven years. I worked as an IT consultant for Hewlett Packard, but always cherished the vision of creating a wonderful social gathering place. My wife and I developed a business plan for a restaurant with delicious food, a bright, contemporary look, and a friendly ambiance, where families could come and enjoy themselves as if they were guests in a great, big living room. We secured our financing and looked for a large venue, 6,000 square feet at a minimum, with at least 50 parking spaces. We chose the name The Great Room, because it best describes our business model, envisioned to be like the spacious multipurpose room in a large Midwestern home that combines the features of a living room with those of a dining room or family room. The Great Room became very busy from the start, especially on Friday nights and weekends. We host birthday parties and other private events, and our calendar is starting to fill up. We love our customers, and we invite all residents and visitors to come spend some time with us at The Great Room!
