Waterfront Destination is Redondo Beach’s Legacy of Past and Future When Redondo Beach was founded in the 1800s, it was intended to be a major port city. We know that isn’t what ended up being the fate of our great city. Instead, Henry Huntington and others saw the potential of Redondo Beach being the premier beach destination for travelers all over the world. Over the years, the waterfront has gone through changes. However, it has always been a focal point of our great tourism amenities. Now, it looks like that is in jeopardy unless we can move forward with a project that keeps Redondo Beach the jewel of Southern California. Despite the passage of Measure C in March, the CenterCal project remains a real possibility. Only California Coastal Commission knows what the fate of the project will be. One thing is for sure that the proposal from CenterCal hits all the major needs our waterfront needs to continue competing with other major beach communities. CenterCal’s version of the waterfront revitalization strikes a great balance between the needs of our residents and our visitors. While creating a great place for the local community, it provides much needed public access to our beach and waterfront for recreational activities both in and out of the water. Redondo Beach has the unique opportunity to reinvent itself into what we used to be. A top tier destination for visitors from around the world, and a quaint beach community that has great amenities for local residents. No matter what happens with the revitalization of our waterfront, we must remember that we were meant to be a beach destination.
