The Redondo Beach Chamber facilitated a Future Business Leader Program on March 30. Future Business Leader is a program that engages with high school students to encourage entrepreneurial thinking. Students must apply for the program and attend a 90 minute training session and luncheon. More than 100 students participated in the event. Students received information and ideas on how to write their business plans from panelists from the following businesses: Christina Wennstrom, Soap Seas; Steve Goldstein, Payroll Management Solutions; Chris Hatanelas, Sack’s on the Beach; Nadia Antii, Riviera Village Wealth Management; and our moderator was Heidi Butzine, owner of Shoplocal.us. The Purpose of the program is to enlighten students with the idea that entrepreneurship is an attainable goal. Starting a business may be hard but there are resources available to assist and the Chamber is here to help point interested parties in the right direction. Students formed groups of 3 or 4 and began working on their business plans. Over 30 business plans were submitted to the Chamber and 5 semifinalist groups were chosen by the Economic Development Council to present their business plans in a “Shark Tank” like presentation. On Friday, May 19th nine judges, including two city councilmembers, attended the “Shark Tank” style presentation. Two groups were chosen, of the five groups presenting, to receive scholarships for their business proposal idea. The Redondo Beach Chamber has provided $3,500 for scholarships to allocate between the two groups. The scholarships will be presented at the Senior Scholarship Awards Celebration, June 19. Special Thank you to Don Ford, Training Education Management for his excellent support and contribution. The Chamber wishes them all the luck and hope they join the Chamber once they’re businesses are up and running!
