Doug Rodriguez Man of the Year HONEST, INTEGRITY, GENEROUS, CHARITABLE These are the top of mind words used to describe our next recipient. Others had this to say: “A really all-around amazing guy” “Impressive human being, artistic, down to earth practicality” “I hope one day I can be at least half the man he is” “Someone I look to as a father figure. I love and respect him, so thankful to have him in my life” “Great family man, husband, father. He is someone who can be trusted” “One of the most kind, funny, caring people I have ever met” ” An honorable man with the utmost integrity. It’s an honor to share this world with him” Perhaps what is most admirable about this guy and why he is considered for this award is his deeply committed service to community above self, not for the fame, glory or photo opportunity, but simply because he truly cares. You will find this individual engaged in the betterment of our community in a variety of ways: He currently serves on: • SALVATION ARMY ADVISORY BOARD • BEACH CITIES HEALTH DISTRICT FINANCE COMMITTEE • ELKS LODGE COMMITTEE • REDONDO BEACH PLANNING COMMISSIONER • RBPD COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT BOARD An advocate for local issues, he has participated in the re-elections of many public officials by walking precincts, engaging voters, and taking a grass roots approach to local and regional government. In addition to his civic involvement, he supports the arts. As a ceramicist/potter himself, he has donated his works to many local charity fundraisers. This hero also donates platelets to the American Red Cross and was recently awarded a CERTIFICATE OF OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT for his 21 platelet donations, saving countless lives including those undergoing cancer. As a graduate of Citizens Police Academy and CERT Program, he promotes safety at our all-around community activities: Traffic Control during Redondo 5K, 10K runs, Safety Fairs, Neighborhood Watch, and has served as the Vice President of the RB CERT Alumni Association. When asked, he steps up, including volunteering at RUHS Sea Hawk football games as First Down chains crew, which he’s done from the past 3 years and swears it’s best seat in house. Also for the past few years, you could find him feeding the fish (literally, not figuratively) and cleaning the tanks assisting Sea Lab – LA Conservation Corp…White Sea Bass release program: Sadly, the last release will be taking place tomorrow, as the facility closes, where you will again find him in action. A renowned coach once said, “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are. The true test of a man's noble character is what he does when no one is watching.” John Wooden, Head Basketball Coach at UCLA. This person truly exemplifies what it means to be a man of character: Perhaps what’s most impressive is that he does these things when he thought no one was watching. Little did he know …all eyes are on him, please help me welcome our 2019 Man of the Year, Doug Rodriguez.
