Chamber PAC Endorsed Candidates Win City Council Bids The District 3 City Council election runoff was a highly contested race. Chamber PAC endorsed candidate Christian Horvath narrowly defeated Candace Nafissi by 12 votes, 1422 votes to 1410. When the first wave of votes came in on Tuesday, May 12, Nafissi held a narrow lead of 16 votes. She was not able to hold that lead as the final days of voting tipped the scales toward Horvath. Christian has been a very active member of the Redondo Beach community for the better part of a decade. He was a graduate of Leadership Redondo, a Chamber board member, and won the Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2013. His commitment to Redondo Beach is what lead him to being the preferred successor to Councilman Pat Aust for many of Redondo Beach’s most notable residents and 1422 District 3 voters. The voter turnout was much higher than the March 3 general, possibly due to the all mail ballot structure of the runoff. 2832 ballots were cast for the runoff, compared to 2626 for the general. This rounded out a successful election cycle for the Chamber PAC. The PAC also endorsed Councilwoman Laura Emdee in her bid for District 5. Emdee won her election with 94.2% of the vote against write-in candidate Robe Richester on March 3rd. Emdee was a member of the Redondo Beach Unified School Board prior to making a bid for city council. The Chamber congratulates Redondo Beach’s two newest councilmembers and looks forward to working with them as they take office. The City of Redondo Beach has many important decisions that will come before council during their four year term and are excited about the possibilities to secure a bright future for our city.
